Finding the Best Size Binoculars for Hunting

When it comes to hunting, having the right equipment can make all the difference. Among the essential tools, a good pair of binoculars stands out. Binoculars enhance your vision, allowing you to spot game from a distance and make informed decisions. However, finding the best size binoculars for hunting can be a daunting task, given the variety of options available. This article aims to guide you through the process of selecting the ideal size binoculars for your hunting needs along with some great examples of each.

Understanding Binocular Specifications

Before diving into the sizes, it’s crucial to understand the basic specifications of binoculars. Binoculars are typically described by two numbers, such as 10x42. The first number (10x) represents the magnification power, while the second number (42) denotes the diameter of the objective lens in millimeters. Both these numbers are crucial in determining the performance of the binoculars.

1. Magnification Power: This indicates how many times closer an object will appear compared to the naked eye. For hunting, a magnification of 8x to 10x is usually ideal. Higher magnifications may offer more detail but can also make it harder to maintain a steady image without a tripod.

2. Objective Lens Diameter: The diameter of the objective lens affects the amount of light that enters the binoculars. A larger diameter means more light, resulting in a brighter image, especially in low-light conditions. However, larger lenses also make the binoculars bulkier and heavier.

Factors to Consider When Choosing Binocular Size

When selecting the best size binoculars for hunting, several factors come into play:

1. Hunting Environment

-Open Fields and Plains: If you hunt in open areas where you need to spot game from long distances, binoculars with higher magnification (10x42 or 12x50) can be advantageous.

- Dense Forests and Woods: In thick forests, a wider field of view is more important than high magnification. Binoculars with 8x42 or 8x32 are preferable, providing a balance between magnification and field of view. If you are looking for some good examples of this, I have attached a more budget friendly option that will fulfill your needs along with a higher end optic that will be sharp as can be.

Your budget friendly example would be these Vortex Diamondback HD 8x32 Binoculars.

Your high end option example would be these Swarovski NL Pure 8x32 Binoculars.

2. Portability

- Lightweight and Compact: If you cover long distances on foot, carrying heavy binoculars can be tiring. Compact binoculars like 8x32 or 10x32 offer a good balance between performance and portability.

- Full-Size: If you primarily hunt from a stationary position, full-size binoculars (10x42 or 12x50) provide better image quality but at the cost of added weight. If you are looking for some good examples of this, I have attached a more budget friendly option that will fulfill your needs along with a higher end optic that will be sharp as can be.

Your budget friendly example would be these Vortex DiamondBack HD 10x42 Binoculars.

Your high end option example would be these Swarovski EL 12x50 Binoculars.

3. Lighting Conditions

- Low Light: Early morning and late evening are prime times for hunting when light conditions are poor. Binoculars with larger objective lenses (42mm or 50mm) allow more light to enter, offering brighter and clearer images in dim conditions.

- Bright Light: In bright daylight, compact binoculars with smaller objective lenses (25mm or 32mm) can suffice, providing sharp images without the bulk.

4. Field of View

- While you might think bigger is better, you have to be mindful of your field of view. A higher magnification binocular will also have a narrower view. If you have a narrow view, you could have an animal 10 feet to the left or to the right of where you are glassing and you wouldn't be able to see it because you are looking so closely. This is something to consider when looking for a great binocular for the right conditions that you will be hunting.

4. Budget

- Binoculars vary widely in price. Higher-end models offer superior optics, better light transmission, and enhanced durability. Determine your budget and seek the best quality within that range. Remember that investing in a good pair of binoculars can significantly enhance your hunting experience.

Popular Binocular Sizes for Hunting

1. 8x32: These binoculars are compact, lightweight, and offer a wide field of view. They are ideal for hunters who need to cover long distances on foot and prefer a lighter load.

2. 8x42: Offering a balance between size and performance, 8x42 binoculars provide good magnification, a wide field of view, and excellent light-gathering capabilities. They are versatile and suitable for various hunting environments.

3. 10x42: With higher magnification, 10x42 binoculars are great for spotting game at longer distances. They are slightly heavier than 8x42 models but still manageable for most hunters.

4. 12x50: These binoculars offer exceptional magnification and light transmission, making them ideal for open fields and long-range hunting. However, they are heavier and may require a tripod for steady viewing.

Personal Opinion

If I am in thick woods where I will be hunting in close quarters and won't be looking into far away areas, my personal choice of binocular is this Sig Zulu 6 HDX 10x30 which has stabilization added to it. While the glass is not the highest quality out there, for close quarter hunting, I have yet to find something better. They are absolutely amazing when it comes to keeping everything stable and you can catch movement within leaves, trees, and shrubs without the need of a tripod. I have attached an unboxing video that I completed on these.

If I am out west, sitting on the side of a mountain, glassing for hours, I will have a pair of 10x42 binoculars and they will be my Swarovski EL's. The best news is that since the NL pure binoculars have come out, these EL's have come down in price roughly $600-$700. If you are in the market for a top of the line optic that will be in your family as an heirloom, this is a great recommendation for anyone.

Conclusion

Choosing the best size binoculars for hunting depends on your specific needs and hunting conditions. Consider factors such as the hunting environment, portability, lighting conditions, and your budget. By understanding the specifications and weighing these factors, you can find a pair of binoculars that enhances your hunting experience, allowing you to spot game more effectively and make the most of your time in the wild.
